Over the past few years there has been a revival of interest in allotment growing with more and more people discovering the benefits of growing their own food.
With the increased awareness of food being sprayed with pesticides and genetically produced food, people are looking at buying and growing organically grown produce.
Another source of interest has been the increase of media interest, garden programmes, such as Ground Force, Gardeners World. In addition to this there are a large number of cookery programmes and articles encouraging people to use organic fruit and vegetables. These programmes and articles are showing that there are many advantages and benefits for growing your own food. You can easily grow by seed or you can purchase your small plants from many garden centres or even by buying from garden magazines and catalogues.
Another contributory factor is that house builders are now building houses with smaller gardens or communal areas. This limits the range for growing your own vegetables, plants and flowers.
We are trying to rekindle people’s enthusiasm for gardening, targeting families, schools and younger people. Children under 16 will have to be accompanied by an adult if they want an allotment.
